I attended Knutsford Makers Market yesterday for the first time. After having to go back home for something I'd forgotten and then getting lost, I arrived at the market pretty flustered. It was quickly apparent that I was out of my depth.
When I found where I was meant to set up, another stallholder approached me asking if I needed help. I must have looked like I needed it! He helped me put together my gazebo, whilst another trader kindly lent me their trolley .
I usually attend these events alone. My partner Jac will come and see me but most of the day I am on my own. But the other traders will always come over and chat and make me feel really welcome.
Yesterday was no exception. The couple trading opposite me offered to watch my stall if I needed a comfort break or to grab a bite to eat. Other traders would come offering advice as I am an obvious newbie. Everyone was friendly but also encouraging. They didn't have to be so nice. They could have just let me struggle, they don't know me. But they did help. So even though it wasn't the greatest day n terms of sales for me, I came back with some good lessons learnt and tips from other business owners. But most importantly I was given optimism and hope.
